drawing the news every day in 2017 and, if the world doesn't blow up this year, maybe even beyond.

European credit chaos, strikes in Britain, and further revelations about corruption in the LA county prison system were no match for the advertising juggernaut that is the The Kardashian sisters (via wraparound ad--and I'd like to point out that all year I've been calling those half-page adverts "wraparound ads," although I have no idea if they are in reality called something else. If anyone out there knows the proper, no-doubt colorful industry jargon for these commercial pleas, leave me a comment or an email and I'll, um, do something nice for you someday.). To make things a little more interesting, I've paired one of them with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Woody Allen. And don't tell me you wouldn't watch that reality show. You totally would.

Erik, congratulations on passing the last month mark! Only 30 days to go. I remain duly impressed.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Toby! I'm of two minds about approaching the finish line: I'll be glad to take a break from such an unforgiving schedule and, you know, hang out with my family. But, when I pick up my paper in the morning on January 1st, I'm sure I'll be drawing it in my head still, and maybe will from now on. But does that mean I'll maybe decide right then and there to keep it going for another year? Oh, no it doesn't.
ReplyDeleteErik: A wraparound ad that covers part of a page is called a spadea (pronounced spa-DEE-a). I worked as a copy editor at The Press-Enterprise in Riverside for many years. From time to time, I dealt with press-run issues. Regards -- Mark
ReplyDeletewow, that's even more colorful and jargon-y than i imagined it would be. thanks for clearing that up, mark! spadea. that's a good scrabble word...
