6 july 2011

Back when I lived in Philadelphia I spent a lot of time at the PMA, and a good portion of that time was spent loitering in the space where Cy Twombly's "50 days of illium" paintings hang. I don't think I've ever had my experience of an artist go from utterly confounded to complete love in quite the same way. Twombly's work, if you get a chance to live with it, will transform a lot of your beliefs about all kinds of things, art included. Rest in peace, Cy; it'll give the rest of us time to catch up.

The space shuttle always makes me think of sneakers for some reason. I've drawn the shuttle quite a bit during this project because, of course, it's being retired this year. So long, shuttle! There's a really great Rick Meyer photo of the shuttle circa 1979 being towed through the desert accompanying the rest of the story inside the A section. I can't find it anywhere online, so I guess that was a little present to the readers of the physical paper. Or I'm no good at searching for stuff online. But I'm pretty sure it's the former.

Happy fourth, y'all. To get us all in a sexy, independent mood the LA Times A1 gave us the requisite photo of locals cooling off at a public pool, but they also gave us a couple of stories about messy, messy democracy in action, and also democracy inaction. Something to mull over while you're pounding beers and setting shit on fire, which you may now resume doing.

2 july 2011

Well, we here at Mixed Media Daily Central Command are officially halfway through our mission as of today. We've met all of our milestones, and we're on target to pull out at the end of the year. There will be no mission creep. Not on my watch.

I guess the biggest change, process-wise, from when I began this thing until now is that I haven't had time recently to append commentary and hyperlinks to each post. However, because I know you all crave a content-rich internet experience, I'm hoping that will change a little in the second half. But really, who knows? Every day is a struggle, baby. Fortune is a fickle mistress. Just ask Dominique Strauss-Kahn! He could tell you some stories.
